ADVOCACY IN ACTION
Kentucky SHAPE (Society of Health and Physical Educators) is actively engaged in advocacy efforts to promote quality health and physical education in Kentucky schools at both the state and federal level. In response to House Bill 301, which proposes allowing extracurricular sports and marching band participation to substitute for the required physical education credit, Kentucky SHAPE has issued a position statement opposing this measure. KYSHAPE emphasizes that while extracurricular activities offer valuable physical activity opportunities, they do not provide the comprehensive, curriculum-based instruction essential for developing lifelong health and fitness skills. Kentucky SHAPE advocates for maintaining the current 0.5 PE credit requirement without substitutions, ensuring all students receive structured physical education from certified educators. MEMBER ACTION REQUIRED: Visit https://kyshape.org/advocacy/state/ to learn more and take time to find your legislators and share our position statement with them today! On the federal level, Kentucky SHAPE leaders will participate in SHAPE America’s annual SPEAK Out! Day on February 26th in Washington, D.C. This event gathers educators nationwide to advocate for full funding of the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA), supporting health and physical education programs in schools. Kentucky SHAPE encourages community members to support this initiative by contacting their congressional representatives in Washington. Read our Speak Out Day press release here: https://kyshape.org/advocacy/federal/ Through these concerted efforts at both state and federal levels, Kentucky SHAPE remains dedicated to ensuring that all students have access to high-quality health physical education, fostering their health and well-being for a lifetime. |
